Charton Manor, although classified as a ‘personal care’ home under the
Care Standards Act 2000, is more like a non-medical hospital and therefore
does not provide long-term accommodation. The categorisation of Charton Manor
as a ‘personal care’ home is due to the fact that Christian Science
nursing is non-medical and the distinction between medical and non-medical
nursing has determined the Government’s designations.
In 1908 Mary Baker Eddy added to the Church’s enduring governing document,
the Manual of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, the
By-law
for the Christian Science nurse for those requiring nursing
care consistent with the theology of
Christian Science. Christian Science nurses therefore need to have “a
demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice” in addition to
thoroughly understanding “the practical wisdom necessary in a sick
room”, and being able to “take proper care of the sick”.
Charton Manor provides 24 hour short-term Christian Science nursing care to
men and women aged 18 and over who have chosen to rely solely upon the Bible-based
method of spiritual healing, Christian Science. This is set out in Science and
Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder
of Christian Science. The reliance on scientific prayer alone for healing in the practice
of Christian Science is an integral part of the theology of the Church of Christ,
Scientist. Patients engage their own Christian Science practitioner listed in
the current issue of
The Christian Science Journal who works with them through prayer,
to bring about the healing.
Charton Manor has always accepted patients with all manner of
afflictions and injuries, no matter how acute or traumatic, should it be the wish
of the patient to rely on Christian Science treatment rather than medical treatment
for their condition. Christian Science nursing services at Charton Manor also
include out-patient facilities. No medical processes, remedies or interventions
are undertaken at Charton Manor. As there are no consultations with doctors or
associated medical professionals, there is no diagnosis or prognosis of a
patient’s affliction or injury. All Christian Science nursing care,
including intensive care, is rendered by qualified Christian Science
nurses listed in The Christian Science Journal and by trainee Christian
Science nurses acting under their supervision.
At any time, a patient has the right to leave and choose another method of health
care in which case every effort would be expended by Charton Manor to assist the
patient to gain access to the care of their choice.
Charton Manor is set on six and a half acres of ground just south of Junction 3 of
the London Orbital Motorway - the M25. All 16 single rooms and 1 double room have
en-suite facilities. The facility is staffed by Christian Science nurses covering
24 hours a day by 3 shifts each supervised by a Journal-listed Christian Science
nurse. The Christian Science nurse is a witness, expectant of spiritual growth,
assisting both the patient and their Journal-listed Christian Science practitioner.
The Christian Science nurse provides whatever nursing care is required by patients
in their reliance on spiritual healing.
Activities are conducted at Charton Manor by a team of Activities Co-ordinators
who, working with the House’s many volunteers, support Christian Science nursing
care patients in their progressive steps and return to normal activity.
