 | | A Brief History |
In 1927 a Bill was introduced to Parliament that required the registration
and medical supervision of all nursing homes in England and Wales. Through
the efforts of Christian Scientists, an amendment was won that exempted
Christian Science nursing homes (Christian Science Houses as they were
required to be called under the Act) from registration. The Bill became law
as the Nursing Homes Registration Act, 1927 and the exemption from registration
was carried forward in subsequent legislation until the Registered Homes Act,
1984 which was repealed on 1st April 2002 when the provisions of the Care Homes
Act 2000 came into force. All exemptions were withdrawn and Charton Manor is
now registered as a “care home not providing medicines or medical
treatment”.
In the early 1930s, a number of Christian Scientists in London formed themselves
into a committee to collect money for the establishment of a nursing home for
Christian Scientists, run on a non-profit basis. While money was still being
collected, Viscount and Viscountess Astor bought Tudor House on Hampstead Heath,
London and, in 1935, gave it to the newly formed Hawthorne Trust to operate as
a Christian Science nursing home. The house, which was the first Christian Science House in the
United Kingdom opened in 1937, renamed Hawthorne House. The house was sold in
November 1987 and the Trust relocated to Charton Manor.
Charton Manor The first known record of a manor house on the site that is now
Charton Manor, was in the Domesday Book of 1086, commissioned by William the
Conqueror. Construction of the new purpose built Charton Manor began on 5th May
1987 and was completed on 4th July 1988. The first guests were received two
months later.
